One eye less
One eye lost for having seen too much; a mirror foreshadowing events from long ago. Expressions that say absolutely nothing; marks that speak volumes in the shadows. Yesterday’s embrace, the wait to embrace again. A pause for thought as a breath is felt nearby, not fear, but doubt, or perhaps shame. It is cold and no one has a coat; the sun beats down on a damp back, yet the moisture remains. Footwear wears down far faster than on an ordinary day. It is time to clean the soles, dry one’s back, change one’s shirt, and adjust the watch strap.
I had best turn around and ask what is wanted, why do I feel pursued when I owe nothing to anyone? I believe there is no one there; I am alone here. I have been alone all this time, with no one but myself in pursuit; that lagoon echoing with my shadow’s voice never quite catches me, yet it stalks me forever.
